Defined as having supreme authority

Social Contract Theory
A
Implicit, or explicit agreement where individuals come together to form a community, agreeing to give up some of their freedoms to a bearer representing “common will” in exchange for the benefits of living as a group

Failed State
A
State where the government is no longer in control, unable to uphold the social contract theory

De jure state
A
State in name - (internationally recognized) but not in practice (unable to govern or exercise the sovereignty or their will on the people

A
State in practice but not in name (has many features of a functioning state but not recognized internationally
