Lecture 4 Flashcards
Power as legitimacy: democracy and its alternatives
Popular sovereignty
Ultimate power to make political decisions is vested in all people rather than some of them or one of them
Through direct democracy (participatory) vs representative (accountable elites)
Political equality
Each adult citizen has the same opportunity as every other adult citizen to participate in political decision making process
One person –> one vote; universal suffrage (need to confirm this)
Political consultation
Will of the people have to be listened to and acted upon
Focus on the legal process of decision-making - respect for election outcomes
Majority rule
Let the people express their views and take a majoritarian position
Need to balance majority interest with minority rights - (self)limited rule
