Lecture 6 Flashcards
Power as information: Media
Mass media
Form of communication intended to reach a large audience across multiple media (e.g. broadcast, print, internet, film etc.) for varied purposes (e.g. advocacy, advertisement, education, entertainment, etc.)
Frame
Shapes public opinion on issues through portraying a story in a particular way: silence some voices, give weight to other sources, etc.
Cyberutopianism
Belief that the Internet can be a force for good, giving voices to less privileged groups and plurality of opinions especially in a participatory democracy - more democratic, decentralized
But this ignores issues that government can quell such efforts through internet censorship, cyber sovereignty and even inject state driven narratives
Echo Chambers
an environment or ecosystem in which participants encounter beliefs that amplify or reinforce their preexisting beliefs by communication and repetition inside a closed system and insulated from rebuttal
due to algorithm’s focus on user engagement
