what is the structure of the mind
A
- conscious section (what you actively think about)
- preconscious section (not thinking about but can be brought into the conscious mind)
- unconscious (completely unaware of)
- id (the unconscious, wants everything)
- ego (negotiator, part of all three consciousnesses)
- the superego (conscious, source of good, angel on the shoulder)

- libido: the drive for pleasure
- Thanatos: death instinct
- energy is finite and a closed system

A
- id ego and superego are always in conflict
- how these conflicts are sorted determines personality

oral stage
A
- first 18 month
- develop ego (learn to delay gratification)
- successful = trust
- unsuccessful = fixation / over indulged

anal stage
A
- 18 months - 4 years
- task is to develop self control (toilet training)
- successful = mastery and self control
- unsuccessful = anal retentive or under controlled or fixation

phallic stage
A
- age 4-6
- task: develop superego and masculinity/femininity
- successful = adopt gender roles
- oedipal complex: boys repress love for mom and identify with dad and become masculine
- Electra complex: repress envy for dad and identify with mom

latency stage
A
- 6-12
- no erogenous zone
- quiet period with same sex friendships
- task: drives need to be transformed through sublimation (reorient needs in new direction that are socially appropriate, learning coping skills)

genital stage
A
- puberty
- tasks: learn to love others, contribute to society by productive, cooperative work

five defense mechanisms

- repression
- denial
- regress (revert to an earlier stage)
- projection
- sublimination (channel feelings into acceptable outlets)
