what are the three levels of motivation
A
- temporary or immediate needs (food, caffeine)
- relatively stable and enduring needs (dominance, achievement, power)
- general needs (freud’s notion of the id)

what is a need
A
- a readiness to respond
- a state of tension
- a feeling of being compelled, pulled
- required a press

what is a press (and the two kinds)
A
- a situation of opportunity that provokes or pulls for a particular need
- alpha press: objective situation
- beta press: perceived/subjective situation

Strong need for achievement (nAch)
A
- highly motivated in a situation that has achievement
- example of how need and press go hand in hand
- more likely to get themselves in an environment where individual success is possible and then will be highly motivated

TAT test
A
- thematic apperception test
- person interprets ambiguous situations in ways that might reflect their most pressing needs

Need for intimacy (nInt)
A
- concern with establishing and maintaining friendly relations among perrons or groups
- sad about separation
- more likely to talking to another, think about someone, feel happy around others

Need for power (nPow)
A
- desire to control or influence others, or have an impact on the world
- strong forceful actions
- attempts to influence
- giving help/advice
- attempts to impress others
- more likely to run for office and want to be in charge

motivation (can be reduced to three)
A
- all other needs can be reduced to these three:
- autonomy, relatedness, competence
- according to self determination theory if these are unmet we are unhappy

intrinsic vs extrinsic motivation
A
- intrinsic reasons: because of the enjoyment or stimulation this foal provides me
- identified reasons: because i really identify with the goal
- introjected reasons: because i would feel guilty if i didn’t pursue this goal
extrinsic reasons: because of the external rewards (money prestige grades) that this goal might bring

A
- people have an inherent need to act autonomously

Maslow’s perspective on needs
A
- hierarchy of needs
- if something basic like health and safety is threatened, self actualization is less of a priority
- psychological needs, safety needs, belongingness/love, esteem, self-actualization

characteristics of slf-actualizers
A
- clear perception of reality
- accept self and others
- creative
- kindship to the human race

flow
A
- when one is totally immersed in an activity
- operating at full potential
- intrinsic enjoyment
- frequent opportunities to experience flow associated with happiness, creativity, fulfillment
