Lecture 8 Boxes Flashcards
Box 6.1; Public Perception of Aging
Someone else’s problem —“What are we going to do with those older people?”
Undesirable and an inescapable decline — almost exclusively associated with decline and deterioration
Isolated — aging perceived as a personal or family problem, not a challenge that society shares
Fatalistic — Tied to fears of decline, depression, and dependence. Fears make aging viewed with dread and impedes policies and solutions that address both the challenges and opportunities
Out of sight out of mind — fears and misperceptions lead to lack of attention to older adults and does little to enhance the experience of aging
Box 12.2; Guidelines for Cerumen Impaction Management
Explain proper ear hygiene to prevent cerumen impaction
Diagnose cerumen impaction when an accumulation of serum that prevents assessment of the ear is seen with an otoscope
Perform otoscopy to detect the presence of cerumen in pts with hearing aids
Assess factors that modify management (ex:anticoagulant therapy, immunocompromised state, DM, prior radiation therapy to head/neck, ear canal stenosis, non-intact tympanic membrane.
Treat or refer to clinical who can treat the pt with cerumen impaction with an appropriate intervention which may include one or more of the following: cerumenolytic agents, irrigation, or manual removal requiring instrumentation.
