Lecture 8 Flashcards
What is condensation?
Water changes from gas to liquid or solid.
What is precipitation?
Water that falls from the atmosphere (liquid or solid).
What are the 3 paths water has once it reaches the surface?
Evaporation-transpiration, infiltration, runoff.
Fill in the blank. You can:
Step over a 1
Jump over a 2
Wade across a 3
Swim across a 4
- Brook
- Creek
- Stream
- River
What are the 5 drainage patterns?
Dendritic, trellis, radial, rectangular, deranged.
does laminar or turbulent flow have a higher erosion rate?
Turbulent
What is the thalweg?
The part of the stream with the highest velocity.
What are the 3 types of transport in fluvial (river) systems?
Bedload, suspended load, dissolved load
what’s a delta
steam flows into standing water where it deposits sediment
What type of depositional area is a fan?
stream flows down hill to flatter surface where it deposits sediment
How do rivers grow?
mass wasting and headward erosion
What is evaporation-transpiration driven by?
Heat from the sun
What is bed load in a river?
Larger particles that roll or slide along the bottom of the river.
What is suspended load in a river?
Finer particles that are suspended in water as they are transported by the river.
How do you calculate the discharge of a river (Q)?
Q=AV where a is the cross section and v is velocity
What are the 3 types of rivers?
Straight, meandering, braided.
What type of river creates and oxbow lake?
Meandering rivers.
What type of river has more sediment than can be transported?
Braided rivers.
What type of load is the majority of sediment in a stream transported as?
Suspended load.
