Lecture 8 Flashcards
What are the two main types of memory?
-Short-term memory(STM)
-Long-term memory(LTM)
What is the first stage in memory and what does it do?
It determines which information is attended to in the environment and how it is interpreted.
What are 3 facts about LTM?
-Brain capacity–> not confidently established
-People remember experiences connected with emotions
-Data stored in LTM is not a high-resolution representation of each particular experience
What are 3 facts about STM?
-STM can only hold about 7(+-2) chunks of info
-STM can hold info between 15s and 30s
-After that, info either goes to LTM or forgotten.
What is Miller’s Law?
-STM can only hold about 7(+-2) chunks of info
What did Bergman and Whittaker invent to help with personal information management?
Three interdependent processes model(2016):
-How to decide what stuff to keep
-How to organize it when storing
-Which strategies to use to retrieve it later
What is the most common approach to personal information management?
To use folders and naming
What are the two main types of learning?
-Incidental learning(recognizing faces)
-Intentional learning(studying for exam)
INTENTIONAL HARDER!!
