emotional memory:
the acquisition of attractions and aversions to otherwise neutral stimuli
how does emotional experience impact your memory?
- emotions can make certain memories more distinct from ordinary memories
- emotions add arousal to declarative memory, which improves recall for important events
how many emotions are there?
27 distinct emotions
emotions are divided into these 2 simplified categories:
attractive (positive, pleasant) and aversive (negative, fear)
attractive memories:
frequency of a stimulus can produce a positive emotional reaction
aversive memories:
frequency of a stimulus can produce a negative emotional reaction
can emotional learning be unconscious?
yes
can animals learn phobias similarly to humans?
yes, it can be taught far for a previously neutral and harmless stimuli
conditioned place preference task:
an animal is confined n several different locations for periods of time. later, the animal is given free reign to decide where it wants to go, demonstrating a preference
