Lecture 7 - The Cell Cycle Flashcards
1
Q
What is the cell cycle?
A
repeating pattern of cell growth followed by nuclear and then cytoplasmic division (meiosis/mitosis the cytokinesis)
2
Q
What are the 4 main stages/phases of the cell cycle?
A
- Gap (G)
- Synthesis (S)
- Gap 2 (G2)
- Mitosis or Meiosis
1 - 3 are called interphase
3
Q
what is diffusion?
A
nutrients from capillary to cell; works other way round
4
Q
What happens during interpahse?
A
the cell grows and the DNA is duplicated
5
Q
What happens during the m phase?
A
the duplicated chromosomes are segregated and distributed into daughter nuclei
6
Q
what happens in G1?
A
- from birth of cell to start of DNA replication
- chromosomes not dividing
- cell grows & utilizes its genetic info to manufacture molecules it needs to carry out functions
- length varies between cells
7
Q
what happens in S?
A
- chromosomes double to form “sister chromatids” joined by centromere
- chromosomes condense at start of M phase
8
Q
what happens in G2?
A
- time between the S phase & start of M phase
- cell growths in concentrates on synthesis of protein that are required for nuclear division
