Lecture 13 - Mutant Screening Flashcards
what is a biochemical pathway?
a series of transformations amongst molecules with in a cell which leads to a desired product being formed or a particular change inside the cell
biological pathways are responsible for…
- assembly of new molecules
- turning genes on or off
- to spur a cell to move
cell receive chemical ques from both inside and outside of the cell prompted by…
nutrient intake, stress, injury, infection, environmental changes, etc
polygenic trait
characteristic that is determined by the interaction of multiple genes, as opposed to a single gene. Polygenic traits are typically influenced by a combination of genetic and environmental factors, and their expression often follows a continuous distribution, with a range of possible values.
what does the complementation test tell us?
if 2 mutants have the same phenotype and if their mutations are in the same gene or different
allelic mutations
occur when the mutant phenotype is due to a loss of function in the same gene
non-allelic mutations
occur when mutations in different genes result in the same phenotype
