Lecture 7 - Muscles of the Upper Extremity and Shoulder Flashcards
attaches muscle to bone
tendon
attaches bone to bone
ligament
body tissue consisting of long cells that contract when stimulated and produce motion
muscle
origin of a muscle
attachment of muscle that is generally the anchor, remains stationary
insertion of a muscle
attachment of a muscle that generally moves and goes closer to the origin when contracted
action of a muscle
describes the movement of a body region at a joint
leader and major responsibility for movement (also known as agonist)
leader / prime mover
against the leader, relax so opposite muscle can do its job
antagonist
main muscle that does an action (also known as prime mover)
agonist
works together, helps prime mover by adding or reducing force
synergist
holds a bone firmly in place
fixators
what are the SITS muscles?
supraspinatus
infraspinatus
teres minor
supscapularis
what is the rotator cuff?
group of muscles and tendons that surround the shoulder joint that keeps head of humerus in the socket
what are the intrinsic muscles of the hand?
- thenar (thumb)
- hypothenar (little finger)
- interossei
- lumbrical
what is the thenar eminence?
- fleshy part at the base of thumb
- 3 muscles
what is the hypothenar eminence?
- fleshy part at base of fifth digit (small finger)
- 4 muscles
the articulation of distal aspect of metacarpals with proximal aspect of phalanges is called….
metacarpophalangeal joints
what is the anatomical snuff box?
- aka radial fossa
- triangular depression found on posterior, lateral side of the wrist and metacarpal (near thumb)
the muscle that forms a rectangular bridge over the carpal bones on palmar side is called….
the flexor retinaculum
what is the function of the flexor retinaculum
forms the roof of the carpal tunnel which covers the tendons of flexor muscles and the median nerve
4 intrinsic muscles of the hand
- thenar
- hypothenar
- interossei
- lumbrical
what does intrinsic hand muscles mean?
intrinsic muscles of the hand contain the origin and insertions within the carpal and metacarpal bones
