Lecture 7 - Hypersensitivity Reactions Flashcards
1
Q
what are the 4 basic types of hypersensitivity reactions?
A
type I: anaphylactic
type II: cytotoxic
type III: abnormal immune complex
type IV: delayed
2
Q
what type of allergic reaction is the most common?
A
type 1 - anaphylactic
3
Q
what could cause a type 2 allergic reaction?
A
incompatible blood transfusion (antibodies act on antigens in RBC = agglutination)
4
Q
what could cause a type 3 allergic reaction?
A
formation of abnormal antigen-antibody complexes that become trapped in capillaries and damage them
5
Q
when does a delayed (type 4) allergic reaction usually appear?
A
12-72 hours after antigen exposure
