Lecture 7 (DONE) Flashcards
Define gestation.
period of time between conception & birth / pregnancy
Define embryonic.
Early pre-natal development
Define fetal.
Late prenatal development
When does the human NS begin to form.
Two weeks gestation
Explain the development of the Human NS.
Neural plate starts to fold and makes a neural tube, eventually forms the CNS.
What does the neural tube later become?
The CNS.
What does the notochord eventually become?
Vertebrae.
What do the neural crest cells eventually become?
The PNS.
How does the forebrain, hind-brain, and mid-brain develop during gestation?
They are all the same size. Eventually the forebrain becomes the biggest part.
What are the 5 stages of brain development?
- Proliferation- mitosis of neural stem cells in ventricular zone of neural tube
- Migration - new cells migrate towards cortical surface
- Differentiation - Diff. into neuronal types and axons and den. form
- Synaptogenesis - synapses form
- Myelination - begins in spinal cord, hindbrain, midbrain, and forebrain
What happens to the teenage brain during development?
Peak connections at 12 years around puberty, but after connections start to get pruned back.
What is “software” another word for in the brain?
Reorganization
Is pre-natal development based on nature or nurture?
Mostly nature b/c it cannot be molded by sensory experience
Are lower species influenced by nature or nurture more?
Nature because the develop faster / less sensory input.
MZ TWINS OR DZ TWINS
IDK DUDE LOOK AT THE GRAPH
The experiment raise animals in vertical lines, explain it and what kind of evidence is it?
Cats wear a VR headset for three weeks that elongate things. Ability to see horizontal lines not good. casual evidence.
The experiment humans raised in different environments, explain it and what kind of of evidence is it?
Humans that do not grow up and see diagonals do not see diagonals as well. it is correlational evidence.
What is similar in animals when it comes to brain?
NT types
What are the differences in the brain when it comes to the brain?
Dominance of functional areas:
-humans/primates: large visual
-dolphins/bats: auditory
-raccoons: somatosensory
As we move up the evolutionary tree, what happens to the brain?
Need more invagination (surface area)
Need more prefrontal cortex
Is there a correlation between brain size and intelligence?
MAYBE, we use a body-to-brain mass ratio.
