Lecture 6 (DONE) Flashcards
Define modularity
Different areas of the brain serve different functions
What is phrenology and how did Franz Gall contribute to it?
Mapped out areas of the skull and stated that different parts do different things.
How did Broca and Wernicke investigate about the human brain?
Certain strokes lead to specific language problems = APHASIA
autopsies to see what they suffered from and what lesions were on the brain
What does the LEFT hemisphere of the brain do?
Language comprehension & production
What does the RIGHT hemisphere of the brain do?
Inflection of words ;; prosody.
How did Penfield use microsimulation to study how the brain works?
People were in surgery, he would mircostimulate different parts of the brain to force an AP.
What are 3 major ways to study the brain?
- Neuroanatomy
- Neural Function
- Perceptual / Behavioral Experiments
Define neuroanatomy and how it is used to study the brain.
CT- Imagining different structures of the brain. certain X-rays get absorbed dependent on density.
MRI- External magnet that changes the directions of the H+ atoms. The slower the direction goes back, the more dense the area is “magnetic density”
What are the 3 ways that neural function is used to study the brain?
- Neurophysiological Response Properties
- Discreet lesions
- Microstimulation
What is single neuron neurophysiology?
Used mostly in animals, uses electrodes to measure AP.
CAT AND THE RED DOT EXPERIMENT.
EXPLAIN IT B. It is correlational evidence.
What is the many neuron brain response?
Neural Imaging techniques
How do we use discrete lesions to determine neural function?
Use an electrode to kill the neuron there and see if there is a loss of ability.
What is microsimulation and how is it used to determine neural function?
With electrodes, we force the neuron to have the opposite effect.
How can we use perceptual/behavior experiments to determine neural function?
MODULARITY / LANGUAGE / reaction times for words / right visual field / left hemisphere.
