Lecture 5 (DONE) Flashcards
What are the basic subdivisions of the vertebrate nervous system?
- CNS & PNS
- Somatic Vs. Automonic
What is the Somatic System?
“voluntary” system
What are the parts of the somatic system?
- Brain “muscles” -> skeletal or voluntary muscle
- Sensory organs -> Brain
What is the Autonomic system?
“involuntary” system. regulates functions of internal organs.
Define the sympathetic system.
Uses energy (FLIGHT OR FIGHT, EMERGENCY)
What does the sympathetic system do?
-increase HR & BP
-decrease digestion & mucus flow
-signals originate in hypothalamus
Define the parasympathetic system.
conserve energy (“rest and digest”, homeostasis)
What does the parasympathetic system do?
Decrease HR & BP
-Increase digestion and mucus
Where do signals originate in the parasympathetic system?
vagus nerve, oculomotor nerve, pelvic nerve
Define nerve.
A bunch of axons traveling together with neurons.
Why do people faints?
The sympathetic nervous system sends too many signals. In response, the parasympathetic system sends even more to fight. The sudden drop in HR and BP leads to lack of blood flowing to the brain.
DIRECTIONAL TERMS
LOOK AT PAPER DIAGRAM
What are the 3 sections of the brain?
Hindbrain, Midbrain, and Forebrain
HMF
What are the 3 sections in the hindbrain? Cere se pone medicina
Cerebellum, pons, and Medulla
Cere se pone medicina
Define Medulla & its functions. MEDREG
regulation of body maintenance ;
vagal nerve, medullary respiratory center, and raphe nucleus
