Lecture 7 - Design of the vascular system (tbc) Flashcards
What are the two ‘juxtaposed’ systems that make up the circulatory system?
Systemic circulation
Pulmonary circulation
Describe the systemic circulation
The systemic circulation sends oxygenated blood from the heart and returns deoxygenated blood back.
Blood vessels exit in parallel circuits
Route that blood takes:
* Left ventricle to……
* aorta to…..
* arteries to……
* arterioles to ……..
capillaries to…..
* venules to…….
* veins to ……
* vena cava to …..
* right atrium and ventricle.
Describe the pulmonary circulation
The pulmonary circulation sends deoxygenated blood to the lungs from the heart for reoxygenation. Once reoxygenated the blood is sent back to the heart
Series circuit
Route that blood takes:
* Right ventricle to……
* pulmonary artery to…..
* arterioles to……
capillaries to…..
* venules to…….
* pulmonary vein to ……
* left atrium and ventricle
What is the basic structure of blood vessels?
Majority of the blood vessel are made up of (from internal-external) endothelium, elastic tissue, smooth muscle, and fibrous tissue.
Structure varies due to function
What layer remains constant in all blood vessels?
Endothelial layer
