Lecture 7: Defining and Assessing Learning Flashcards
1
Q
Performance
A
- Execution of a skill (observable)
- Ex. Shooting a free throw
2
Q
Learning
A
- Gaining knowledge of a skill through experience, should be a relatively permanent improvement in that skill.
- Not observable.
- Must be inferred from observable behavior.
3
Q
What does the acronym R.A.P.S.C.I stand for?
A
- The 6 performance characteristics that define learning.
a. Improvement (Error down, performance up)
b. Consistency (Similar to past successful performance)
c. Stability (Performing task well if stress is present)
d. Persistence (Doing a skill after a long time) (Riding a bike)
e. Adaptability (Generalization, can skill be transferred to different setting)
f. Reduced attention demands (Directing attention somewhere else and performing skill well)
4
Q
What is the acronym for “Learning Assessment Techniques”?
A
- O.R.T
a. Observing practice performance
b. Retention Tests
c. Transfer Tests
5
Q
Observing Practice Performance
A
- Performance Curves
- Line graph that plots performance measures across practice trials or periods of time.
- X axis: Time (Bottom)
- Y axis: Performance (side)
6
Q
Continuous Skill
A
- No clear beginning and end
- Repeated over and over again
7
Q
Discrete Skill
A
- Definite beginning and end
8
Q
What are the 4 general trends in performance curves
A
- Linear
- Negatively accelerated
- Positively accelerated
- Ogive or S-shaped
9
Q
Kinetics
A
- How force affects motion
10
Q
Kinematics
A
- How an object moves through space
11
Q
What is “Arc Consistency”
A
- As time goes on, an individual becomes more consistent
- Decreases variability–> Learning occurred
12
Q
Performance Curve Tip
A
- Motor learning can be measured through performance curves, but performance curves are not learning curves.
- Performance does not always indicate progress
13
Q
Two reasons why practice performance may misrepresent learning
A
- Artificial inflation or depression of performance.
- Performance plateaus: training stops and doesn’t get any better. (Flooring and ceiling effects)
14
Q
The Law of Practice
A
- Performance continuous if practice continuous, but slows over time.
15
Q
Law of Diminishing Returns
A
- Gains slow over time.
- If you don’t alter practice, you wont improve.
