Lecture 10: Transfer of Motor Learning Flashcards
1
Q
What is Transfer of Learning?
A
- Influence of previous experience on:
- Learning a new skill
- Performing a skill in a new context.
2
Q
Positive Transfer
A
- Beneficial effect of prior learning on the learning of a new skill or the performance of a skill in new context.
3
Q
Negative Transfer
A
- Negative effect of prior learning on the learning of a new skill/performance of skill in new context.
4
Q
Neutral (Zero)
A
- Previous experience has no influence on learning of a new skill.
5
Q
Why is transfer learning so important?
A
- Sequencing skills to be learned (step by step) (gentiles: less to more complex)
- Assessing the effectiveness of practice conditions (transfer tests)
6
Q
Why does Positive Transfer Occur?
A
- Similarity of still and context components. (Roots in Thorndike’s “Identical elements” theory: Similarity of skill components and context components)
- Similarity of processing requirements (Similarity of the cognitive process)
7
Q
Negative Transfer
A
- Rare and temporary, can be overcome with practice.
- Important to note that it could cause discouragement early in practice.
8
Q
What is negative transfer?
A
- Occurs when sill or context involves similar environmental context features but requires different movement response
- Ex. Unintended acceleration effect.
9
Q
3 main reasons why negative transfer occurs
A
- Cognitive confusion
- Individuals natural way of thinking clashes with what the task requires them to do.
- When you’re used to doing something a certain way, your habits make you do the wrong thing in that situation.
10
Q
Bilateral Transfer
A
- Transfer of learning that occurs between two limbs
- Also known as inter-manual transfer, cross-transfer, cross-education.
11
Q
Asymmetric transfer
A
- Greater transfer from one limb than the other
- Research Support: Greater amount of transfer occurs from preferred to non-preferred limb.
12
Q
Symmetric transfer
A
- Similar transfer from one limb to the other, regardless of which was used first.
13
Q
Why does Bilateral Transfer Occur (Cognitive explanation)
A
- Important cognitive info acquired from practice with one limb available when other limb begins to perform
14
Q
Why does Bilateral Transfer Occur (Motor Control Explanation)
A
- Generalized motor control program (GMP) and dynamic pattern theories both provide a basis for bilateral transfer.
