Lecture 6: Memory Flashcards
What is working memory?
temporary, attention demanding store used to retain new information until it’s used
used to evaluate and compare different mental operations
a conscious buffer
used to hold or rehearse new info until encoded into LTM
What are the three parts of WM?
central executive
verbal/phonetic loop
visual scratchpad
What form is spatial WM in?
analog, typically visual images
What form is verbal WM in?
linguistic, sounds and words
What kind of representation is WM information associated with?
semantic representations, attaching meaning
What is code interference?
disruption of each system by each other if there are concurrent activities and task load is high
What is an example of code interference?
drivers turning down music when they’re lost
What are chunks?
meaningful units of information
set of adjacent units that are closely tied together by association in LTM
What does chunking do?
reduces number of items in WM and WM load which allows more rehearsal and better transfer to LTM
What is forgetting interference?
from passage of time, diversion of attention, and active interference
What is proactive interference?
information from the past is interfering with new information
not letting go
What is retroactive interference?
info processed after current task interferes with retrieval
What should be encouraged to transfer information from WM to LTM?
active learning
