Lecture 10: Human Error and Attention Flashcards
What is human error?
errors made by humans due to poor design
What are mistakes?
knowledge-based errors of situation interpretation
What are slips?
correct interpretation of situations and choice of action, but wrong action is selected
What are lapses?
failure, forgetting to carry out an action
What is mode error?
Making actions in a mode you think are appropriate when you’re actually in a different mode
What are latent factors?
hidden factors that lead up to the error, part of the blunt end of the system
What are the stages of hierarchy of control?
elimination
substitution
engineering controls
administrative controls
PPE
What determines the amount of attentional resources?
level of arousal
automatic v. controlled processing
structure of task resources
What are the three methods of task scheduling?
concurrent processing
switching
shedding
What does multiple resource theory describe?
the combinations of resource capacities and resource properties
What are the four dimensions of the multiple resource theory?
Modalities: auditory v. visual
Coding: verbal v. spatial
Stages: early v. late
Responses: verbal v. manual
What influences divided attention?
scheduling
task similarity
practice (attention is a skill)
