Institution (formal)
Codified regulations and agreements, treaties.
Ex) UN, WTO, NATO etc.
institution (informal)
Standards and expectations that are not codified or written, but understood by actors.
Ex) Manners and Etiquette, norms.
It specifies standards of behavior or expectations about how one is to behave under certain conditions. “Rules of the Game.”
International Institutions
Alliances and Collective Security Organizations
Alliances
inter-state institutions that help members cooperate militarily in case of war with a common foe. Facilitates peace by preparing for war.
Collective Security Organizations
multi-lateral institutions that seek to facilitate peace by providing dispute resolution mechanisms and a collective response to aggression. Forbids the use of military force.

1) when states bandwagon and when they balance,
2) why states will ally with some but not with others,
3) why not all strong states provoke the same type of counterbalancing coalition is sometimes not clear.
