Lecture 6 Flashcards
Culture definition (in article)
“Myriad ways of living exhibited by a particular group of people, ways that are transmitted from one generation to the next and which distinguish that group from others”
Decision making definition (in article)
“Commitment to a course of action that is intended to serve the interest and values of particular people”
Holistic vs Analytical
Holistic:
-The field - the whole rather than parts
-Interactionism - everything is related
-Cyclic - phenomenons are chaotic
-Naive dialectism - Middleground compromise rather than extremes
Analytical:
-The parts - the parts rather than whole
-Dispositionism - nothing is related
-Linear - Phenomenons move in predictable directions
-Formal logic - extremums are fine if it is logical
Promotion/prevention focus
Promotion - focus on pursuing opportunities
Prevention - seek to prevent risks
Attention to: holistic vs analytic
Holistic (The field):
The whole, rather than its
parts, should be considered
in order to understand a
phenomenon
Analytical (The parts):
It is more important to pay
attention to the parts than
the whole
Causality: holistic vs analytic
Holistic (Interactionism):
Everything in the universe is
somehow related to each
other
Analytic ( Dispositionism):
Nothing is related
Perception of change: holistic vs analytic
Holistic (Cyclic):
Phenomenons move in chaotic and unpredictable directions
Analytic (Linear):
Every phenomenon in the
world moves in predictable
directions
Contradiction: holistic vs analytic
Holistic (Naive dialectism):
It is more desirable to take the middle ground than go to extremes
Analytic (Formal logic):
Take the side of what is right even if extreme
Cultural norm strength meaning
if you behave or do something that is not a cultural norm and get penalized for even a small deviation - tight strength
if you are not penalized for small deviations - loose cultural norms strength
The death of experience
when a person integrated in the new culture for too long and lost the original culture
The breadth of experince
The amount of cultures is helpful, but if it’s too broad, less helpful
