Lecture 5 Organics Flashcards
What is the IUPAC?
The International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry is an international federation of National Adhering Organizations that represents chemists in individual countries.
How do you name alkanes?
Prefix is given by # of carbons in longest chain
Suffix is -ane
What is the ranking of functional groups?
Carboxylic acid or amide or aldehyde greater than hydroxyl or amines
What are alkyl groups?
Hydrocarbon subituents (Chains, branches)
How do you name alkyl groups (branches)?
Identify its point of attachment. Name it by its number of carbons but give it the suffix -yl
How do you name alkenes?
Prefix is given by # of carbons in longest chain
Suffix is -ene. Give a number to show where the double bond is, put this between chain name.
How do you name alkynes?
Prefix is given by # of carbons in longest chain
Suffix is -yne. Give a number to show where the triple bond is, put this between chain name.
How do you name alcohols?
Prefix is given by # of carbons in longest chain
Suffix is -ol. Give a number to show where the -OH is, put this between chain name.
How do you name amines?
Add suffix -amine, to the end of the parent alkyl (carbon chain). Ethylamine ect.
How do you name ethers?
The smaller alkyl group becomes the alkoxy part (start) and the longer alkyl group becomes the alkane base name (end)
How do you name aldehydes?
Longest chain determines prefix
Suffix = -al
ect. Pentan al
True or False? Start numbering from the funtional group
True
How do you name keytones?
Longest chain determines prefix
Suffix = -one
Determine position
ect. Pentan-3-one
How do you name carboxylic acids?
Longest chain determines prefix
Suffix = -oic acid
ect. Pent-4-enoic acid
How do you name amides?
Longest chain determines prefix
Suffix = -amide
ect. Butanamide
