What are obsessions?
Recurrent thoughts, urges, or images that are experienced as intrusive/unwanted and cause marked distress or anxiety
What are compulsions?
Repetitive behaviours or mental acts that the person feels driven to perform in response to an obsession or according to rigid rules
What is the goal of compulsions?
To prevent or reduce anxiety/distress or prevent some dreaded event or situation
‘I’ll contaminate my children and they’ll die because of it’

Repeated hand-washing after touching contaminated objects

What is magical thinking?
sometimes compulsions are not logically linked to obsessions, for example repeating a phrase to prevent a family member dying in a car accident.
