Lecture 5 Flashcards
this type of system has less risk of contamination and is more expensive
closed
this type of system has high lvl of garbage/waste, must be careful bag doesn’t hang >24 hrs
open
modalities of feeding:
continuous, cyclical, intermittent, bolus
what is continuous feeding:
pump assisted (or gravity) continuous drip infusion, preferred for critically ill/refeeding risk/poor glycemic control, J tube, intolerance other modalities; doesn’t mimic natural eating times, limits mobility
what is cyclical?
provides EN by pump over time period less than 24 h
what is intermittent feeding
delivered by pump/gravity, larger volumes into stomach over short periods, mimics meals
what is bolus feeding
similar to intermittent fed via syringe and more aggressive, mimics meals and provides freedom of mvmt
choice of modality affected by:
med condition/status, location of tip of feeding tube, pt expected tolerance, lvl of care, equipment availability, transitions across care continuum
when new TF, use this modality:
continuous
when transitioning to oral diet use ___ or ___
cyclical (nocturnal) ; intermittent (eat then top up)
for long term TF that is stable, use this modality:
intermittent/bolus
types of feeding tube ports:
Y port, single port
at minimum for continuous feed, flush tube with ___mL sterilized water ____
30; q4h
at minimum for intermittent feed, flush tube with ___ mL water pre/post each feed
30
flush with ____ mL water pre/post each med
