Lecture 5 Flashcards
Coronal Section
Cutting the brain as if there was a horizontal line coming down on the brain in between the ears
Sagital Section
Cutting the brain between the two hemispheres
Horizontal Section
Cutting the brain horizontally as if from the nose to the back of the head
Huntington’s Disease/CAG
repeat accumulation
A rare, inherited disease that causes the progressive breakdown (degeneration) of nerve cells in the brain
Central Nervous System
Composed of the brain and the spinal cord
Peripheral Nervous System
The part of your nervous system that lies outside your brain and spinal cord
Afferent Neurons
Neurons which carry information from sensory receptors of the skin and other organs to the central nervous system (i.e., brain and spinal cord)
Efferent
Neurons which carry motor information away from the central nervous system to the muscles and glands of the body
Somatic Nervous System
- Communicates with sense organs and voluntary muscles
Autonomic Nervous System
- Communicates with internal organs and glands
- involuntary
Parasympathetic Nervous System
- Contained within the autonomic nervous system
- Rest and digest
- Slows heartbeat
- Digestion
Sympathetic Nervous System
- Contained within the autonomic nervous system
- Fight or flight system
- Accelerates heartbeat
- Inhibits digestion
Cranial Nerves
- Enter the brain via the brainstem
Brain Stem
- Made up of the medulla, pons, and midbrain
- Bridge from spinal cord to brain
- Has cranial nerves going in and out
- Has unique nuclei
