Lecture 43- Respiratory System Part 3 Flashcards
What is diffusion? How can it become more efficient in gas exchange?
Movement from a region of higher concentration to lower concentration
Distance for diffusion is short
What is Fick’s Law?
Diffusion rate is increased by larger surface area, smaller membrane thickness, smaller molecules, and more O2 available
What is Henry’s Law?
Gasses will dissolve into solution in proportion to their partial pressure in order to reach equilibrium
What does the amount of gas dissolving in a liquid depend on?
Solubility
What transports oxygen?
Hemoglobin
When O2 binds to hemoglobin, a conformational change occurs in the other subunits, which make binding of O2 ______ likely.
More
Where does oxyhemoglobin occur?
Lungs
Where does deoxyhemoglobin occur?
Tissues
What is cooperatively in regards to oxygen binding sites?
When one molecule of O2 binds which causes a conformational change that makes other heme units more accessible to oxygen
Note that this creates the sigmoidal curve
Will air pressure and air density increase/decrease/stay the same when altitude increases?
Decrease
True or false:
The composition of air will change when there is a change in altitude?
FALSE
Composition of air does not change with altitude
What is Dalton’s Law?
Total pressure=sum of each gas pressure
