Lecture 4 - Sleep Apnea Flashcards
1
Q
Sleep Apnea
A
- Recurrent episodes of not breathing during sleep
- Can occur about 60 times per hours in severe cases
- can be obstructive (obesity) or neural (central) in nature
2
Q
Sleep Apnea Affects…
A
- Affects 4% of the population
- more common in males and linked heavily to obesity
- Can also be affected by sex, age, race, face/neck structure, & levels of alcohol or smoking consumption
3
Q
Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA)
A
- complete or partial collapse of upper airway
- translated to apnea & hypoxia events
- Arousal activated from sympathetic activation
- Oxyhemoglobin desaturation
4
Q
Apnea Events
A
Cessation of airflow for >10 seconds
5
Q
Hypoxia Events
A
Decreased airflow for 10 or more seconds
6
Q
Sleep Apnea leads to…. (7)
A
- Excess daytime somnolence
- Impaired cognitive performance
- Poor quality of life
- Increased risk of MVA
- Adverse cardiovascular outcomes
- Systemic & pulmonary hypertension
- Metabolic syndrome (?)
7
Q
Obesity + Sleep Apnea
A
- fatty deposition alters airway shapes
- decreases glossopharygeal neural actions and muscle tone
- central abdominal fat displaces room
8
Q
Central Sleep Apnea (CSA)
A
- “Cheynes-Stokes” respiration
- Leads to patterns of hyperventilation, apnea, and hyperventilation again
