Lecture 4 - Neural and Hormonal Systems Cont. Flashcards
what are the types of neurons?
motor, sensory, and interneurons.
motor neurons
carry signals from brain or spinal cord to muscles, skin, and glands
sensory neurons
carry messages from receptors to spinal cord and brain
interneurons
receive signals from sensory neurons and other interneurons and send impulses to other interneurons or motor neurons
what are the two parts of the nervous system ?
central and peripheral
central nervous system
brain and spinal cord
responds to sensory info
sends messages to muscles, glands, and organs
spinal cord
extension of the brain
handles both incoming and outgoing messages
acts as bridge between brain and body below neck
spinal reflexes
give an example
automatic responses that occurred without any involvement
hitting below knee and kicking
pulling hand away from hot stove
peripheral nervous system
all of NS outside brain and spinal cord
allows communication between CNS and sensory systems
contains somatic and autonomic NS
what is the peripheral NS two components ?
somatic and autonomic
somatic
voluntary
sensory and motor pathways
what are the two parts of the autonomic system
automatic
sympathetic and parasympathetic
sympathetic
increase physiological arousal
stress
fight or flight
parasympathetic
decreases arousal
peace
rest and digest
what is the endocrine system made up of
hormones, hypothalamus, pituitary gland, adrenal glands
