Lecture 4 Flashcards
Cocci
List the toxins of Staphylococcus aureus and what they do
1) Cytotoxin: toxic to leukocytes, platlets, macrophages etc.
2)Haemolysins: Destroys RBC
3)Enterotoxins: superanitgen makes T-cells go crazy, cause of food poisoning
4)Exfoliative toxin: (remember exfoliating skin) these causes scalded skin syndrome
5)Toxic shock syndrome
What is Coagulase eenzyme
produced by almost all pathogenic staphylococci; coagulates fibrin.
When is Coagulase used
coagulase test is used as the main test for the identification of Staphylococcus aureus
What enzyme destroys penicillin
Beta-lactamase
What cocci bacteria is oppertunistic?
Staphylococcus epidermis
Streptococci is subdivided into groups based on?
1) Haemolytic properties:
2)Carbohydrate C-Antigen:extracted from cell wall, subdivides streptococci in groups A-T
3)M-protein: divides beta haemolytic, mostly group A
What is Streptococcus pyogenes classified as?
Group A, Beta hemolytic
What does Streptococcus pyogenes
cause
strep throat: lead to rheumatic heart disease, rash, fever
What enzyme is made by Streptococcus pyogenes ?
hyaluronidase helps spreading of bacteria and and destroys CT
What is another name for Flesh-eating disease
Necrotizing fasciitis
What bacteria is group B
Streptococcus agalactiae
where is Streptococcus agalactiae found in?
Found in vagina of health women (can cause neonatal infections)
What is group D bacteria?
Streptococcus faecalis
What flora is Enterococcus usually apart of?
Part of normal flora of GI-tract, pray on compromised individuals
What bacteria is foud in oral cavity of health individuals
Viridens streptococci
