Lecture 1 Flashcards
Introduction
what type of organisms on grow in living cells
viruses and chlamydia
what type of organisms grow on non living media
Mycoplasma
What are viruses made of?
-Nucleic acid (either RNA or DNA…never both!)
-Surrounded by protein shell (capsid)
list all properties of bacteria
- Rigid cell wall to keep things in place
- Genetic material – circular chromosome
- No nucleus (nucleoid)
- Both DNA and RNA
- Binary fission
What type of bacteria is mainly on the skin
mostly coagulase negative staphylococci
Difference between contamination and colanization
Contamination: Pathogen dosent have to do anything it gets a free ride inside the body.
Colanization:means they have to actively do something in order to be able to establish themselvesves inside the body
what does Pathogenicity mean
ability to produce disease
What is invasiveness
adherence, persistence, avoidance of
immune system
What is toxigenicity
ability to make toxins
What tools are used for pathogen to adhere to us?
surface structures (pili, fimbriae)
capsules
enzymes
What are Exotoxins
excreted by living cells
- specific affinities
- thermolabile
- potent
What are endotoxins
liberated when cell wall disintegrates
- less specific, causes fever, malaise, shock
- thermostable
- less potent than exotoxins
what are exo and endotoxins classes of?
Toxinogenicity
