voluntary agreement or permission given by one who is considered capable of making an informed decision

agreement or approval given by a person who may not have the legal capacity to provide full consent (not fully competent to make informed decision)

- best to determine prevalence
- study multiple outcomes and exposures
- usually questionnaires

- can be highly generalizable
- less costly, quick, no follow up
- can give important directions for further research

- can’t establish temporal relationship
- not incident
- rare diseases can’t be studied
