Lecture 4/15/16 Flashcards
Function of vitamin E
antioxidant
Deficiency of Vitamin E
Myopathy, anemia, neuropathy
Sources of Vit. E
vegetable Seeds and oils
All-rac-a-tocopherol
Rac = racemic; all 8 forms of tocopherols are present in a sample; also known as all-d-tocopherol
What is the difference between tocopherols and tocotrienols?
Tocopherols do not have DB; tocotrienols do; differences in a,b,g are the R groups in the ring
How is Vit E. Absorbed?
Bile acids uptake Vit E; absorbed primarily in the jejunum by passive diffusion or active transport by (SR-B1) in peripheral tissues
SR-BL
involved in HDL metabolism; also responsible for the uptake of Vitamin E in peripheral tissues;
What is the most active form of Vitamin E (anti-oxidant properties)?
a-tocopherol
Even though vitamin K is produced by colonic bacteria and absorbed passively in the colon, bacterial synthesis is not sufficient to meet the needs of children or adults? (T/F)
T
Individuals on anti-coagulant medication coumadin are instructed to avoid consumption of large quantities of vit. K rich foods, such as spinach, collards, turnip greens, or broccoli. (T/F)
