Lecture 4 Flashcards
What is the main difference in the blood vascular system and the lymphatic system?
- a continuous loop vs an open ended system
Where are major arteries located in the body and why?
Deep in body to avoid damage
Where do arteries change names?
At each major branch
What are the names of the varying degrees of permeability?
- continuous ( controlled / tight)
- fenestrated ( leaky)
- sinusoidal (very leaky)
What are the 3 pathways for drainage?
- deep veins (next to arteries)
- superficial veins (visible under skin)
- lymphatics
What is the cross sectional area of veins compared to arteries?
At least twice that of
What is the apex of the heart?
Pointed end
What is the base of the heart?
Broad end
Where does the base of the heart point?
- slightly posteriorly
Where does the apex of the heart point?
- slightly anteriorly and to the left
Name the paths of venous return to the atria of the heart?
Right Atrium receives: - superior vena cava - inferior vena cava - coronary sinus ( deoxygenated) Left atrium receives: - four pulmonary veins (Oxygenated)
Name the three layers of the heart wall:
- endocardium
- myocardium
- epicardium
What is the role of the pericardial sac?
- protects the heart and provides a lubricated surface for it to beat against
What layer of the heart makes up the bulk of what we see?
Myocardium
What is the endocardium made of?
Squamous epithelium, loose irregular fibrous connective tissue, small blood vessels, and purkinje fibres
