Why maintain competence?
Maintaining Competence
• A professional responsibility and the hallmark of
self-regulated professionals
• It is a pharmacist’s professional responsibility to
- Continuously improve professional knowledge and
skills
- Take responsibility for maintaining a high standard
of professional competence
- Evaluate individual practice
- Assume responsibility for improvement
- Keep informed about new pharmaceutical
knowledge
What are the 2 ways to maintain competence?
- Traditional continuing education
2. Continuing professional development (CPD)
What is Continuing Education (CE)?
• Traditional approach focussed on acquisition of knowledge (cognitive) • Accredited programs - Distance learning (print or online) - Classroom-based - Conferences, professional meetings
What is Continuing Professional Development (CPD)?
• CPD is a self-directed, ongoing, systematic, and
outcomes-focused approach to an individual’s lifelong
learning that is applied into practice.
What is the CPD Model (Cycle)?

At each step, documentation occurs, review goals are met
Applying what they have learnt and loop back to evaluate and make changes

What is reflection?
“Active, persistent and careful consideration of any
belief or supposed form of knowledge…”
“We do not learn from experience, we learn from reflecting on experience.”

Continuing Competence Program (CCP)
What are the guiding principles? (5)
- Flexibility: Ability of program to accommodate diff pharmacist w diff practice settings and Learning preferences
- Engaging: inspiringc career long learning, peer to peer interactions and opportunitiesfor pharm
• Forward-looking: helping pharmacist meet changing needs of albertans and integrating
With other ACP programs, support throughout programs
- Sustainable: ongoing relevance of program and ability to change over time when new needs or practices required
- Responsible: make sure they meet legislative requirements
CCP - What are the adult learning principles?
- Relevance / involved in creating education
- Based on experience
- Know reason for learning something
- Problem-centred vs content
- Internal motivation
- Responsible for learning
What are the CCP requirements?
For each continuing education (CE) cycle
(e.g. June 1, 2019 - May 31, 2020)
• Complete at least 15 continuing education units
(CEUs) 1 CEU = 1 hour of contact time
• Complete any required learning
Assigned by the Competence Committee
• Implement at least 1 CEU into practice
• Self-assess (Optional)
• Submit records (Portfolio)
