Lecture 32: Climate Change Flashcards
1
Q
what drives climate change?
A
the unprecendented growth in atmospheric co2 since 19th century
2
Q
how does it affect human health?
A
negatively impacts the building blocks for good health
e.g; the largest mass poisoning in new zealand history
- threaten food security
- displace whole populations
- 64 deaths in puerto rico (directly attributed to hurricane maria)
- direct effects of climate change on heath: drought, heat, fire
- indirect effect: spread of disease vectors
3
Q
what are some protective interventions for climate change?
A
- cool roofs
- floating gardens
- akl anti flooding plan
- plant diet (cuts greenhouse emissions, maximises public health)
- multiple satisfier (health, mobility, efficiency, emission reduction)
- reduce reliance on cars + support people to walk, cycle + use public transport
- community trials of insulation + clean heating, higher temps, lower disease rates, smaller power bills
