lecture 31 Flashcards
who do we need kidneys
to control what is in our blood and how much we have of said thing
what does our kidneys make glucose from and when
during a fasting state or under stress, our kidneys will glucose from lactate
what are the sources of acid in the body
carbon dioxide from metabolism and acids from the food an drink which we consume
how do we control the pH of our blood
through exhaling of CO2 and also by reabsorbing and secreting bicarbonate and hydrogen ions
how do we maintain salt/ion homeostasis
by the kidneys secreting K+ ions
what does it mean to be a lipophilic drug
lidocaine is an example, these drugs are only excreted after being processed in the liver due to their nature
what does it mean to be a hydrophilic drug
aspirin is a common painkiller, it is excreted by the kidneys directly due to water soluble nature
why can we see changes in volume of fluid in body compartments
it can change due to the amount of fluid in the body, and the osmolarity of the water compartments
define osmolarity
the total number of solute molecules in a solution
what happens at the Proximal convoluted tubule
secretion of metabolites, medications and toxins,
bulk reabsorption of ions, water and glucose
what happens in the nephron loop
bulk reabsorption of ions, Na+ and water
what happens in the distal convoluted tubule
fine tuning and regulated reasborption of ions and water
what happens in the collecting duct
fine tuning and regulated reasborption of ions and water
