Lecture 30 the Arm and Cubital Fossa Flashcards
What is the cubital fossa?
- the junction between the arm and forearm regions
What vein do we draw blood from?
- cephalic vein
Why do we not draw blood from the basilic vein?
- it is associated with the brachial artery and median nerve so it is not as safe to draw blood from
What is the lateral boundary of the cubital fossa?
- brachioradialis muscle
What is the medial boundary of cubital fossa?
- pronator teres muscle
What is the superior border of the cubital fossa?
- imaginary line between medial and lateral epicondyles of humerus
What is the roof of cubital fossa?
- skin, superficial and deep fascia and bicipital aponeurosis
What is the floor of the cubital fossa?
- supinator, (deep, not shown) and brachialis muslce
What muscle has two heads that the median nerve travels between?
- pronator teres
What are the contents of the cubital fossa?
- median nerve
- brachial a. with bifurcation of radial and ulnar arteries
- tendon of biceps brachii and bicipital aponeurosis
- radial nerve
(deep and superficial)
What nerves travel through the anterior division of the arm but do not innervate it?
- the medial and ulnar nerves
travel along side brachial artery and veins and collateral artery and veins in neurovascular bundle
Where does the ulnar nerve run in relationship to the medial epicondyle of the humerus?
- posterior to medial epicondyle of humerus
What artery runs with the ulnar nerve posterior to medial epicondyle?
- posterior ulnar recurrent artery
What nerve innervates the anterior compartments of the brachium?
- musculocutaneous nerve
What actions do the musculocutaneous nerve stimulate?
- flexion
What nerve is found in the posterior compartment (extensor)?
- radial nerve with collateral arteries and vein
What cutenous nerve is associated with left pain in arm from heart attack?
- intercostobrachial nerve (comes from T2)
Where do the supraclavicular nerves come from and what do they innervate?
- cervical plexus and skin around deltoid and pecs
