Lecture 30 the Arm and Cubital Fossa Flashcards
What is the cubital fossa?
- the junction between the arm and forearm regions
What vein do we draw blood from?
- cephalic vein
Why do we not draw blood from the basilic vein?
- it is associated with the brachial artery and median nerve so it is not as safe to draw blood from
What is the lateral boundary of the cubital fossa?
- brachioradialis muscle
What is the medial boundary of cubital fossa?
- pronator teres muscle
What is the superior border of the cubital fossa?
- imaginary line between medial and lateral epicondyles of humerus
What is the roof of cubital fossa?
- skin, superficial and deep fascia and bicipital aponeurosis
What is the floor of the cubital fossa?
- supinator, (deep, not shown) and brachialis muslce
What muscle has two heads that the median nerve travels between?
- pronator teres
What are the contents of the cubital fossa?
- median nerve
- brachial a. with bifurcation of radial and ulnar arteries
- tendon of biceps brachii and bicipital aponeurosis
- radial nerve
(deep and superficial)
What nerves travel through the anterior division of the arm but do not innervate it?
- the medial and ulnar nerves
travel along side brachial artery and veins and collateral artery and veins in neurovascular bundle
Where does the ulnar nerve run in relationship to the medial epicondyle of the humerus?
- posterior to medial epicondyle of humerus
What artery runs with the ulnar nerve posterior to medial epicondyle?
- posterior ulnar recurrent artery
What nerve innervates the anterior compartments of the brachium?
- musculocutaneous nerve
What actions do the musculocutaneous nerve stimulate?
- flexion
What nerve is found in the posterior compartment (extensor)?
- radial nerve with collateral arteries and vein
What cutenous nerve is associated with left pain in arm from heart attack?
- intercostobrachial nerve (comes from T2)
Where do the supraclavicular nerves come from and what do they innervate?
- cervical plexus and skin around deltoid and pecs
What cutaneous nerves come from the radial nerve?
- posterior cutaneous nerve of arm
- posterior cutaneous nerve of arm (near armpit)
- posterior cutaneous nerve of forearm
What branch of the brachial plexus does the superior lateral cutaneous nerve come from?
- axillary nerve
Where does medial cutaneous nerve of arm come from?
- medial cord of brachial plexus
Where does the lateral cutaneous nerve of forearm come from??
- it terminal musculocutaneous nerve
emerges in cubital region
What gives rise to brachial artery?
- axillary artery
what gives rise to profunda brachii a.?
- brachial a
What branches off of the profunda brachii a?
- post. descending branch (middle collateral)
- anter. descending branch
(radial collateral)
Where do the superior and inferior ulnar collateral a. come from?
- brachial a.
What does the anterior ulnar recurrent artery anastomose with?
- inferior ulnar collateral
Superior ulnar collateral anastomose with?
- posterior ulnar collateral
Radial collateral artery anastomoses with
radial recurrent artery
Radial collateral artery anastomoses with
- radial recurrent artery
where does the long head of the biceps brachii originate?
- supraglenoid tubercle of scapula
Where does the short head of biceps brachii originate?
- coracoid process of scapula
Where is the distal attachment (insertion) of biceps?
- radial tuberosity and fascia of forearm via bicipital aponeurosis
What is the actions of biceps?
- supinates forearm, when supine will flex forearm
- resists dislocation of shoulder (short head)
What innervates the biceps?
- musculocutaneous nerve
What muscle has the same function as the short head of biceps?
- coracobrachialis
Where is the origin of the coracobrachialis?
- coracoid process of scapula
Where is the insertion of coracobrachialis?
- middle 1/3 of medial humeral surface
What is the action of coracobrachialis?
- flexes and adducts arm at shoulder joint
- resists dislocation of shoulder joint
What innervates coracobrachialis?
- musculocutaneous nerve
What three muscles attach to corocoid process?
- coracobrachialis
- short head of biceps
- pectoralis minor
What muscle is the strongest and main flexor?
- brachialis
What is the origin of brachialis muscle?
- distal 1/2 of anterior surface of humerus
What is the insertion of brachialis muscle?
- coronoid process and tuberosity of ulna
What is the innervation of brachialis muscle?
- musculocutaneous
- lateral portions may recieve radial nerve contributions
What is the deepest head of the triceps?
- medial head
What is the function of the triceps?
- extension
