Lecture 30 Flashcards
Name three structures that protect the urinary tract
- Transitional epithelium
- Protein plaques
- Entrance to bladder prevents backflow
Name the muscle that forms the wall of the bladder
Detrusor muscle
What is the Detrusor muscle’s function?
To expel urine
What is transitional epithelium
- Transitions from one state to another by stretching
Where are ureters located?
They arise from each renal pelvis at each hilum
How do ureters carry urine into the bladder?
They run obliquely through the wall of the bladder at its posterolateral corners
Three layers of the ureter
- Transitional epithelium
- Muscularis
- Adventitia
What is the function of the ureters?
To carry urine from the kidneys to the bladder
Empty bladder
- Pyramidal
- Lies within the pelvis
Full bladder
- Becomes more spherical
- Expands superiorly into abdominal cavity
Where is the male bladder located?
Anterior to the rectum, above to prostate gland
Where is the female bladder located?
Anterior to vagina and ureters
