Lecture 29 Flashcards
2 types of nephrons
Cortical and juxtamedullary nephrons
Where are cortical nephrons located?
Mainly in the cortex
Where are juxtamedullary nephrons located?
Deep in the medulla
What are nephrons comprised of?
- A glomerular capsule
- Renal tubules
- Collecting duct
Glomerular capillaries are specialized for
Filtration
Glomerular capillaries are…
Thin-walled, and have a single layer of fenestrated endothelial cells
Peritubular capillaries
Specialized for absorption
Peritubular capillaries wrap around _____
Renal tubules
Peritubular capillaries receive filtered blood from the _______via _____arterioles
Glomerulus, efferent
What are vasa recta
Extensions that follow loops of Henle deep into the medulla. Only found with juxtamedullary nephrons
The glomerulus has two layers
- Outer parietal layer of simple squamous cells
2. Inner visceral layer of podocytes
Podocytes
Very branched form foot processes called pedicels.
Proximal convoluted tubule
- Bulk reabsorption
- surrounded by peritubular capillaries
Epithelium of DCT
Cuboidal epithelium but thinner than the PCT
Structure of the DCT
- Few microvilli
- Few mitochondria
- Reabsorption influenced mainly by aldosterone
