Verbal Communication
Communication that which occurs through spoken or written language.
Non-Verbal Communication
Communication that occurs through behaviour other than written or spoken language
The Triangle of Meaning:
explains the relationships between symbols, referents, and thoughts
Symbol
a word, sound, or visual device that represents a thought, concept, or object. Words are symbols that represents something else (e.g. $ = money
Referent
the thing that a symbol represents or refers to. basically is the picture you get in your head.
(e.g. the word bus is a symbol - but the actual vehicle that the word bus represents is a referent)
Thought
the mental process of creating a category, idea, or image triggered by a referent or symbol
Denotative Meaning
the literal definition of a word
Connotative Meaning
conveys feeling or cultural meaning and is the personal/subjective meaning of a word
Concrete words
can experience it w 1 of the 5 senses
Abstract words
if you are unable to experience the referent w our senses, it is abstract
Arbitrary
when there is not necessarily a logical connection between the symbol and referent; no inherent meaning in a word (e.g. wifi)
Onomatopoetic
words that imitate a sound associated with that word, such as “buzz,” “hum,” “pow”
Semantics
the study of words and meaning
Symbolic Interaction Theory
suggests that a society/culture is bound together by the common use of symbols (words)
Restricted Code
use of words with particular meaning known only to a subculture (e.g. texting, nurse slang, etc)
Jargon
Workplace Jargon
Special words or expressions that are used by a particular profession or group and are difficult for others to understand (e.g. code brown, frequent flyer, etc)
Allness Statements
unqualified, often untrue generalizations that deny variations (e.g. stereotypes)
Static Evaluations
Labelling people, objects, or events without considering how things evolve
Polarizing
Descriptions in extreme (e.g. good/bad, old/new, etc)
Biased Language/Sexist and Demeaning
Biased and giving roles a certain gender (e.g. Congressman, fireman, etc)
Bypassing
different meanings to the same word or phrase (e.g. my boss is fair - good-looking? or fair?)
