Lecture 3: Cells Flashcards
What is a nucleus?
Contains chromosomes that make up DNA.
What is a mitochondria?
Produces energy for a cell.
What is a chloroplast?
Photosynthesis occurs in here; contains chlorophyll.
What is a vacuole?
Storage unit for water, salts, toxic products.
What is the cell membrane?
Innermost layer surrounding the cell that controls what is absorbed or secreted by the cell.
What is the cell wall?
Protects the cell and helps it maintain its shape and is very rigid.
What is the primary cell wall made of?
Cellulose.
What is the secondary cell wall made of?
Cellulose and lignin.
What is the purpose of the secondary cell wall?
Additional protection for the cell.
Where is the secondary cell wall located?
Formed within the cell wall and outside of the cell membrane.
