Why is it important to have voluntary, non-remunerated blood donors?
- Paid donation associated with inc. risk of blood borne virus transmission - Also exploitation of poor and disadvantaged
What is the window period?
Time gap between exposure to antigen and production of antibody
In NZ all blood components are ____ before transfusion
Leucodepleted
What 3 blood components are separated as a result of blood filtration?
- Red cells - Platelet concentrates - Fresh frozen plasma
What four specific factors should be taken into account when considering red cell transfusion?
- Cardiopulmonary reserve - Volume of blood loss - Oxygen consumption - Atherosclerotic disease
In which clinical scenarios may platelet transfusion be done prophylactically?
- Bone marrow failure - Surgery/invasive procedure - Platelet function disorder
Dosage of Fresh Frozen Plasma (FFP) is based on what factor?
Body weight (12-15ml/kg)
