Lecture 3 Flashcards
How are plants classified based on life span?
Annuals, Biennials, Perennials.
What are the general features of roots?
Non-green, underground, geotropic, no nodes, with root hairs.
What are the types of root systems?
Tap Root (from radicle) and Adventitious Root (from other plant parts).
Name the root regions.
Root Cap, Meristematic Zone, Elongation Zone, Maturation Zone.
What are nodulated roots?
Roots with nodules formed by nitrogen-fixing bacteria (e.g., Peas).
What are respiratory roots?
Roots that grow upward to absorb oxygen in marshy areas (e.g., Mangroves).
What is the function of the stem?
Supports branches, transports nutrients, stores food.
What are the forms of stems?
Caudex, Culm, Excurrent, Decurrent.
What is the main role of leaves?
Photosynthesis and food production.
What is a flower?
A reproductive shoot with sepals, petals, stamens, and carpels.
What is a Tap Root?
A primary root that grows from the radicle and branches (e.g., Dicot plants).
What is an Adventitious Root?
Roots that grow from other parts of the plant, not the radicle (e.g., Monocot plants).
What are the main functions of roots?
Fixation, water absorption, food storage, and conduction.
What are pneumatophores?
Roots that grow out of the soil to absorb oxygen in swampy areas.
What are the main functions of stems?
Support, transport, storage, and vegetative propagation.
