Lecture 3 Flashcards
Macromolecules
What are the four classes of macromolecules
- Proteins
- Polysaccharides (carbs)
- Nucleic Acids
- Lipids (fats)
What is the function of proteins?
- transport
- catalysing reactions
-sending signals - energy storage
- receiving signals
- structure
What is the function of polysaccharides?
The provide structural organisation, and energy storage to animal and plant cells.
What is the function of nucleic acids?
They carry DNA material which codes for the proteins by which the living cell functions.
What is the function of lipids?
They are part of the cell membrane, and help control what enters and exits the cell.
What is the building block principle?
Monomers are the building blocks for the four macromolecules. Monosaccharides are the monomer for polysaccharides. Amino acids are the monomers of proteins. Nucleotides are the monomers of nucleic acids. Glycerol and fatty acids are the monomers of lipids.
Amino acids
The monomers of proteins.
Proteins
one or more polypeptides folded into a specific conformation (3D shape) to enable its biological function.
Polypeptide
A linear polymer of covalently-bonded amino acids.
