What are the 3 different cannons
The Jewish, Catholic and Christian
What is the LXX?
The Septuagint The Greek translation of the Old Testament, contains the Apocrypha and gives the Christian canon its order. History, present and Future.
The 3 divisions of the Bible
Tanakh
Torah- the law
Nevei’im- the prophets
Ketuvim - the writings, the catch all for everything else
Pentateuch or Torah
The first 5 books of the Bible
Genesis
Creation, stories of Adam and Eve, their children, the development of
civilization amidst a series of rebellions or falls such as the flood and the tower of Babel (Gen. 1-
11). Chapters 12-50 contain the stories of Israel’s patriarchs and matriarchs: Abraham and
Sarah, Isaac and Rebekah, Jacob and Leah/Rachel, Joseph in Egypt and his ascent to prominence
there.
Exodus
The story of Moses and his role as savior of Israel from the oppression of
Pharaoh through the plagues and Exodus event. The beginnings of the wilderness wanderings
and the covenant of Israel with God at Sinai where God reveals law to the Israelites and the
instructions for a tabernacle
Leviticus
Instructions for sacrifice along with other priestly rituals and purity laws
Numbers
Narrative of Israel’s wanderings in the wilderness with the theme of
grumbling and rebellion being very prominent
Deuteronomy
the speeches of Moses as the Israelites are about to enter into the
promised land. Moses reiterates the covenant revealed at Sinai in a second giving of the law.
Moses dies before entering the promised land.
Major prophets vs. minor prophets
Major prophets have more time in the Bible
The Apocrypha or Deucanonical books
The hidden books, part of the Catholic canon
What does canon mean?
