Lecture 15 Flashcards
Narrative context of Deuteronomy-
Obey the covenant and the laws and receive God’s blessing or Disobey the covenant and receive punishment
Deuteronomy and the Covenant-
Deuteronomy, while not structured as a treaty (covenant), appeals to the treaty analogy to structure its speeches. However, it also appeals to history and remembering which is close in comparison to the Hittite treaties. There is, therefore, a comparison to both Assyrian and Hittite covenants
Deuteronomy and Vassal treaties of the ANELove in Deuteronomy
Deuteronomy and Josiah-
A Preamble An historical prologue (outlines a brief history of the relationship)
A list of the requirements of the treaty
A list of curses that will follow if the treaty is broken
Law of Centralization-
Modern scholars link Deuteronomy to the discovery in the temple of “the book of the Law” in 2 Kgs. 22:8, and the ensuing religious reform under King Josiah (622 BCE) •2 Kings 22 notes that the “book of the law” had been lost. Israel had not celebrated the Passover since the days of the Judges.•Deut. 12 centralizes the sacrificial cult in “the place in which God shall cause his name to dwell” cf. Exod. 20:24 “in every place I cause my name to be remembered.” This indicates multiple places of worship are okay.A new law for the time in the land.
