Q

Judge -

A

charismatic rulers who arose spontaneously (not dynastically) in crisis
situations to rule and lead the people in battle. Their authority came primarily from
their ability to win battles, but also from the notion that they were endowed with
the “spirit of Yahweh”

Q

Monarchy in Judges -

A

• One point of the book of judges is to set the stage for the monarchy. The monarchy will
combat the anarchy that appears in the book of judges and the constant threats from
outside enemies (Philistines) as well as theoretically solve the problem of division
among the tribes.
• The question of whether or not the monarchy will solve this problem is addressed in the
book of Judges with the decidedly ambiguous presentation of kingship in the book.
• The Ideal (Yahweh is King and will fight for his people)
