Q

Complete/Incomplete conquest-

A

Complete Conquest - At first glance the storyline of the book of Joshua narrates an
orderly conquest of the land followed by a distribution of the land to the tribes under
the leadership of Joshua, Moses’s successor and servant. Josh. 10:40-43; 11:16-23; 12.
• Incomplete Conquest – It appears from many texts that the people, who had been
defeated are still around after the events of Joshua (Josh. 13:13; 15:63; Judges 1:21, 27-
33; 2:3).
o On further analysis, the texts that hint toward a complete conquest are summary
statements and describe the success of the endeavor and are simply noting that
the land is firmly in Israel’s control. The text says Joshua only burned a few cities
- Josh. 11:13 - Hazor, and elsewhere Jericho and Ai (Josh. 6 & 7).
o Thus, we should not expect widescale destruction within the land
